G321: Target Audience Profile

Our film is a Romantic-Comedy aimed at British females with an interest in socialising and relationships. It is likely that our target audience will be interested in shopping, fashion, keeping fit and being around family and friends. This genre of film is likely to appeal to those from the demographic groups C1 through to E which includes office workers, skilled workers, blue-collar workers, students and pensioners. It will be a mainstream film meaning many types of people are likely to view it, particularly the ones previously mentioned. We aim to apply the Uses and Gratifications theory (McQuail 1987) to our film so that the audience can relate to the characters involved and want to be like them. We will also use common everyday settings and have a realistic storyline that is representative of many people. The Hypodermic Needle theory can also be applied to our audience as we found from our questionnaire that audiences often find rom-coms as ‘easy-viewing’ and will happily be fed the information without deep processing.

Our film will be certified as a 15 targeting those aged 15 and above. This is because existing films of this genre that we have looked at such as Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) and Love and other Drugs (2010) have also been classified as a 15. We took into account British films like Bridget Jones as this is more comparable to what we are trying to create. We also want to target a similar audience to those who watch these films as we know that they are likely to be interested in our film, providing us with a mainstream audience. Our film may appeal to a range of races however would be most popular with those of British heritage as it will be more relatable to their life.

Although our film will probably be more popular with female audiences, we don’t want to put males off by being sexist or rude so we will ensure that it depicts both genders equally.
